Rainforest Just one jurisdiction in Canada -- British Columbia -- holds fully a quarter of the world's remaining tracts of temperate rainforest. It is a mist-shrouded land of rugged fjords, storm-battered islands and magnificent valleys lined with cathedral forests of cedar, hemlock, spruces and firs. These coastal forests are the traditional territories of First Nations peoples who have lived for millennia amongst the towering trees and rich salmon runs.

Coniferous Forest A forest containing ‘coniferous’ plants is a coniferous forest. These are places where winters are very cold, summers do not last very long, and there is not much rainfall. Tundra The Arctic ecozones, which have the lowest precipitation in Canada, encompass the Arctic islands as well as the northern portion of the continent from the Yukon to Labrador. This is the land of intense cold, where average annual temperatures range between –17oC and –7oC, depending on the region. In February 1979, meteorologists at Eureka Station on Ellesmere Island calculated an average monthly temperature of –47.9oC, which still stands as a record for Canada. In such conditions, it is not surprising to find permafrost, ground that remains frozen all year long, sometimes to a depth of several hundred metres.
